Advocacy & Awareness

PON’s advocacy and awareness efforts empower parents to advocate for their children’s educational needs while simultaneously influencing policies at the district, state, and national levels. By combining grassroots engagement, community outreach, and strategic policy advocacy, PON seeks to create lasting, systemic change that improves educational outcomes for all students, particularly those from underserved communities.

Over the past decades, PON’s advocacy has influenced the following school district and state plans and policies with stronger family engagement:

  • 2014 Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) in five school districts
  • 2017 Los Angeles Unified School District policy on Disruptive Person Letters (parent bans) and training for administrators on relationship building and conflict resolution
  •  2017 Preliminary California Administrative Services Credentialing Content Expectations and Performance Expectations with their Alignment to the California Professional Standards for Education Administrators
  • 2019 Local Control Funding Formula Priority 3 Self-Reflection Tool
  • 2019 Two court decisions related to parent bans are resolved with one deciding in favor of parents and another in favor of the school district.
  • 2020 Commission on Teacher Credentialing’s Strategic Plan
  • 2021 LCAPs in three school districts
  • 2023 California Math Framework
  • 2024 California Standards for the Teaching Profession

PON amplifies the voices of parents, fostering meaningful partnerships
